The Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) is gearing up for the 2020 Knowledge to Leadership Conference (K2L), its signature one-day conference taking place on January 30, 2020, for members and those interested in law firm management. K2L has been a leading event for Bay Area legal professionals for more than 25 years and the 2020 conference will be no different.
Hannah Lincecum, a SHRM-certified human resources manager at Reed Smith and the K2L event chair, joined the Law Firm Marketing Catalyst podcast to talk about what attendees can expect at the conference. Here’s what she had to say about K2L.
Why: The Golden Gate chapter of the ALA founded the K2L conference in 1993 as a way to give back to their members and show appreciation for their support. The chapter chose the name “Knowledge to Leadership” because the conference educates attendees on the technical functions of the business of law, and helps them strengthen their professional development and leadership skills. It’s a wide-ranging conference where attendees can dial in on a specific function they want to know more about, while learning about the soft skills they need to succeed, too.
What: The 2020 conference agenda is packed with interesting topics and speakers. Every session touches on some aspect of the business of law, whether information technology, operations, management, human resources or another function particular to the legal industry. Hannah is particularly excited for a new session about secretarial management, which will feature representatives from different-sized law firms sharing how they use their secretaries.
Technical sessions will be complemented with sessions about communication, leadership, time management and more. The three keynotes aren’t to be missed; they’ll cover three of the legal industry’s hottest topics: diversity and inclusion, mindfulness and managing across generations.
The K2L conference will also have an exhibition hall, where 30 of Golden Gate ALA’s partners will share products and services unique to the legal industry. The exhibition hall provides an opportunity to network and find tools that will make your job easier.
Who: This is clearly a worthwhile conference for legal administrators, but anyone in a professional staff role at a law firm can benefit from K2L. Not only can you build upon skills you already have, but you can also sign up for sessions that cover new topics you want to learn more about. And if you’re simply interested in the law firm business or considering joining the field, you’re more than welcome at the conference—it was designed to give outsiders a peek behind the curtain.
